Tamarisk/Salt Cedar

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

Tamarisk or Salt Cedar (Tamarix) is a large tree native to arid regions of Africa and Eurasia.

This tree is extremely invasive and should never be planted intentionally. Tamarisk was originally brought to Las Vegas and the Southwestern U.S. as a shade tree and windbreak before it’s negative environmental impact was known. It has since caused major damage and habitat change to the entire Colorado River Basin, and riparian zones across California and the American southwest.

Large specimens can still be seen in the older parts of Las Vegas, and volunteer sprouts can be found all over the Valley.
